Culture & history

To truly have a greater more holistic understanding of a language we cannot compartmentalize it in to purely the “language” (grammar, vocabulary, phonology) alone and divorce it from the societies and nations from which it emerged, but must also understand these societies, their history and culture. This helps us with things such as idioms and colloquial cultural references and enables us to have a greater appreciation of English and the English-speaking world.
